Collection Stats

Feel free your info. or not at your comfort level or comment on my musings:

GIS- 11,491 books; average age of collection 1988

GHS- 7,044 books; average age of collection 1981

I have been working on improving the average age of the collection for the past 4 years. It is a slow process. National standards indicate that we (as a public school) should be within 10 years as an average age. This allows for the classics to remain on the shelf with copyright dates of 1907 and such but bringing up science titles to current standards and knowledge.

Here are a few examples of specific Dewey catagorizations:
GHS 000-099 1992
500-599 1977
Fiction 1982

GIS 000-099 1995
500-599 1990
Fiction 1987

The average age is a guideline but I really like to look more specifically at the breakdown by Dewey 100s (and even smaller sometimes). Obviously our science collection at the high school should average more recent than 1977. Fiction I'm not too concerned about because we have the classics with copyright dates before the 20th century.
